Important Notice on Drinking and Travel Insurance! - Many people do not realise that being drunk can invalidate your travel insurance claim. If you have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol and then suffer an accident or property loss, e.g. lose your wallet, your insurer may judge that your excessive drinking was responsible and will not accept your claim. You are therefore advised to drink sensibly when on holiday.

Heading off on Holiday? Packed Everything? There's a lot to remember, but make sure you don't forget the most important thing to travel with, travel insurance. If you don't have adequate travel insurance you could face a huge medical bill if you are injured or need medical treatment whilst away.

It's now easier than ever to arrange travel insurance, with a wide range of travel insurance policies being available to buy online. It's important to choose a policy that is tailored to your requirements, but whether you are looking for single trip cover, multi-trip cover, European Cover or Worldwide cover there should be a policy available online to suit your travel needs.

Planning your trip is an exciting part of going abroad, but make sure you check any travel insurance policy carefully as they are all different in the levels of cover they provide. Whether you are travelling alone or as part of a family, for business or leisure, travel insurance is a vital item to pack in your travel kit, and will give you peace of mind.

Types of Travel Insurance Policies Available

The various types of travel insurance policies available include:

Medical Travel Insurance - There are specialist medical travel insurance companies who offer a complete package for those with pre-existing medical conditions.

- Over 50s Travel Insurance

- Over 65s Travel Insurance

- Golf Holiday Insurance

- Ski Travel Insurance

- Winter Sports Travel Insurance

- Activity Holidays Travel Insurance

- Business Travel Insurance

- Student Travel Insurance

- Longer Trip Travel Insurance

- Single Trip Travel Insurance. A policy which covers you for just one trip, although many single trip travel insurance policies are valid for trips from 1-90 days.

- Annual Multi Trip Cover. A policy which will cover you for multiple trips within a year. If you are planning a number of trips within a year, this type of policy is likely to be cheaper than a single trip policy.

- Annual Travel Insurance

- Family Travel Insurance

- Comprehensive Travel Insurance.

- Immediate cover. Some companies are set up to provide instant travel insurance cover.

Things to Check For On a Travel Insurance Policy

- Make sure that the policy covers you for the whole time that you are away.

- Medical cover for an injury or illness abroad.

- 24 hour emergency service and assistance.

- Personal liability cover, which covers you if you are sued for injuring someone else or damaging their property.

- Personal accident cover. This type of cover will provide a pay out in the event of an accident causing permanent disability or death.

- Cancellation cover.

- Curtailment cover, which provides cover if you have to cut short your trip.

- You should also check what reasons are accepted for cancellation or curtailment of your trip. Common reasons accepted may be illness, accident, pregnancy, jury service or a witness summons, an emergency at home (house fire, storm or flood damage, burglary), being made redundant, strikes, bad weather affecting departures.

- Lost or stolen possessions cover. You can often choose the level of cover for this. Note that you should report any loss or theft to the Police within 24 hours and obtain proof of notification, otherwise you risk invalidating your insurance.

- Cover for lost baggage.

- Loss of luggage cover. Unless you are prepared to rely on your airline, which is legally required to provide a minimum value of compensation for lost luggage based on its weight, you will need specific additional cover for this.

- Loss of passports cover.

- Loss of money cover.

- Legal assistance cover. Some policies offer this. This will assist you in obtaining compensation for personal injury when abroad.

- Specific activity cover, e.g. if participating in an adventure sport this is not likely to be covered by a standard travel insurance policy and you must arrange specific cover for this.

- Financial protection in the event that your airline goes bankrupt either before or during your trip.

How Much Travel Insurance Cover Is Needed?

These levels are suggestions only and you should ensure that you are comfortable with the levels of cover your travel insurance policy provides:

Medical cover of five million pounds (£5,000,000). Whilst medical claims of this amount are rare, they can happen. Costs can quickly mount up, for example repatriation costs to the UK are typically around £25,000.

Personal liability cover of two million pounds (£2,000,000). If you seriously injure someone else then they may never be able to work again, hence the high level of cover suggested.

Cancellation cover of three thousand pounds (£3,000). This amount of cover should be adequate for most, and only needs to be reviewed for those taking very expensive holidays.

Lost baggage cover of one thousand five hundred pounds (£1,500). Note that in the event of a claim most travel insurance policies will pay you the second hand value of your property, not the cost to replace with new items.

Common Travel Insurance Exclusions

- If you being drunk or under the influence of illegal drugs caused your accident, you will void your travel insurance.

- Acts of terrorism. Be aware that it is not uncommon for acts of terrorism to be excluded from travel insurance policies. However, you should be able to find a policy that does include acts of terrorism if you want one.

- Due care. You must take due care of your possessions when abroad, otherwise your travel insurance company may deem you to have been negligent and will not accept your claim.

Backpacker and Student Cover

If you are considering taking a gap year or wanting to travel for a long period of time, cover is available specifically for this.

Adventure Sports Travel Insurance

If you are planning a holiday that will involve specific adventure sports, e.g. mountain biking, white water rafting or mountaineering, you will need to arrange travel insurance that specifically covers these activities. Fortunately, it's easy to find out whether a travel insurance will cover a particular adventure sport.

Popular adventure sports include white water rafting and scuba diving.

Winter Sports Travel Insurance

If you are going on a winter sports holiday, you will need to make sure that the particular winter sports you will undertake are covered by your travel insurance policy.

Why Buy Travel Insurance Online?

The internet is good for buying travel insurance as you can quickly compare travel insurance policies from many providers, allowing you to find a deal tailored to your needs. You will often find that the deals available online are more competitive, so it is easy to save money too.

Holiday Safety Tips

Drink sensibly when on holiday. Your insurance company may not accept your claim if they judge that excessive alcohol consumption was responsible for you needing to make a claim, e.g. you had an accident or lost something because you were drunk.

Do not take illegal drugs when on holiday. Being under the influence of illegal drugs will invalidate your travel insurance.

Consider the risk of terrorist activity in the country you are going to.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Volcanic Ash Cloud Disruption?

Cancellations and delays caused by volcanic ash cloud disruption are not always covered by travel insurance, so you will have to check your own policy to see if this is covered.
